Benedictine monasticism was a significant factor in the development of medieval civilization. Since the beginning of the Middle Ages, it has become an integral part of the shared experience of the peoples on the European continent over the centuries. This work provides an overview of the long and unusual history of Benedictine monasticism in Europe and on other continents from its beginnings to the present day.
