Does epigenetics undermine our genes? Or not? Epigenetics refers to biochemical molecules that interact with the DNA in our cells throughout our lives and intricately regulate our genetic material. Development, growth, as well as diseases and even our psyche are influenced by epigenetic factors. The environment and our lifestyle play a significant role in this and alter the epigenetic aspects within us. Epigenetics demands new perspectives, not only in biology but also in an interdisciplinary context: How does epigenetic thinking change our understanding of our genes, of living organisms, of development, of evolution, and of inheritance? In the new anthology from the interdisciplinary working group on genetic technology reports of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, not only is the status quo of epigenetics presented, but it is also examined how this knowledge evolves.
