What is known about Epicurus (341-270 BC) takes on a unique signature when compared to other texts from antiquity: Epicurus' philosophy is inscribed in everyday life. Instead of relying on abstraction and systematic thinking, it depends on concreteness and experience. This is especially true for Epicurus' central theme: that a person cannot live in joy without also being reasonable, decent, and just, just as one cannot be reasonable, decent, and just without living in joy. Geyer therefore pays special attention to Epicurus' philosophy of joy and clarifies that the Epicurean "hedone" is not the key concept of a philosophy of pleasure and amorality, but rather stands at the center of a practical guide to living rightly.
