The notion that the municipal independence movements in bishop cities during the High and Late Middle Ages completely eliminated the influence of the city lord still prevails. The contributions in this collected volume analyze case studies in the areas of presence, interaction, and court organization in cathedral cities, illustrating a wide range of constellations that prompt a reevaluation of the old master narrative in urban historical research: In numerous cities, the lordly position of the bishop was never called into question. Furthermore, the bishops themselves remained present at their bishopric even after moving out of the city, through the performance of rituals, architecture, the furnishings of the cathedral, or the maintenance of memorial sites. Additionally, the ecclesiastical institutions that remained in the city, such as the cathedral chapter, the ecclesiastical administration, or the bishop's council, managed to preserve their position.
