Product details

When the Korean farmer Lee Kyung Hae committed suicide in 2003 at the WTO ministerial meeting in Cancun, he held a sign that read "The WTO kills farmers." His suicide is merely the most visible among tens of thousands: in India alone, 30,000 farmers have died in the last decade due to globalization policies. The trade rules focused on economic interests set by the WTO strip small farmers around the world of their livelihoods and drive them into despair. Indian eco-feminist and recipient of the Alternative Nobel Peace Prize, Vandana Shiva, calls her vision of a just world order "Earth Democracy": a democracy that is rooted locally and regionally but is based on central, universally valid values. A democracy that excludes no one from participating in the treasures of nature. A global democracy where the interests of the economy do not take precedence, but rather people and sustainable interaction with nature are at the center. This book is the essence of Vandana Shiva's years of research on ecological, social, and political issues – with "Earth Democracy," she unites her insights into a grand guiding idea. "Earth Democracy" is an alternative to the worldview of economic globalizers who see people and nature as exploitable raw materials or unnecessary waste. It is a plea for a different kind of globalization.
