In the summer of 1845, the expedition ships HMS "Erebus" and "Terror" vanished without a trace in the North Atlantic while searching for the Northwest Passage. Countless search expeditions in the following years set out to uncover the fate of the legendary polar explorer Sir John Franklin, but they failed to achieve their goal. It was not until 1857/59 that Francis Leopold McClintock (1819-1907) provided conclusive evidence that "Erebus" and "Terror" had perished in the icy deserts of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and that John Franklin and his crews had met a terrible end. McClintock's report on the "Voyage of the Fox in the Arctic Seas," undertaken at the behest of Lady Jane Franklin, was published in the autumn of 1859 and became a bestseller in Victorian England. The volume presented here includes a first translation of the travel journal.
