Product details

On all four of his known voyages, Henry Hudson sought a short passage over the Arctic Ocean to East Asia - to the realms of Zipangu (Japan) and Cathay (China). His first journey in 1607 took him to Greenland and as far as Spitsbergen, but he did not find the suspected Northwest Passage. The following year, he searched for an eastern sea route along the northern coast of Russia and reached Novaya Zemlya, where the impenetrable ice forced him to turn back. In 1609, on behalf of the Dutch East India Company, he explored the river that would later be named after him, the Hudson River, thus enabling the establishment of New Amsterdam, which later became New York. In 1610, during another search for a Northwest Passage, he reached the bay that would also be named after him, Hudson Bay, and wintered there under the harshest conditions. However, his weary crew, exhausted from the hardships, mutinied in the summer of 1611 and left him.
