Product details

Schelling's philosophy from the Freedom Essay to the Ages of the World clearly shows the traces of his reception of the theosophical writings of Jacob Böhme and Christoph Oetinger, as well as the influence of Franz von Baader. At the same time, his idealistic thinking remains present. In the present study, both lines of tradition are not, as is often the case, set against each other, but rather brought together. Schelling's idealistic approach - this is the thesis - can be unfolded against the backdrop of his theosophical-Kabbalistic speculations as a critique of the concept of autonomy: Schelling dissolves the opposition of nature and freedom and shows that this contradiction, which characterizes Kant's concept of autonomy, is a dialectical movement of repression, in which the excluded, nature, enters the concept of autonomy in the mode of inversion. With the help of theosophical-Kabbalistic figures of thought on the one hand and in the context of the controversy about faith and knowledge, which was intensified by Friedrich Jacobi, on the other hand, Schelling pursues the universalization of freedom. In the metaphor of the inverted God, his negative sharpening of Kant's theoretical piece on radical evil culminates.
