The city and region of Rothenburg ob der Tauber can be described as an early stronghold of National Socialism. The conditions, forms, and scope of the regime were particularly pronounced here. The face of the NSDAP and its appeal in this small town in western Middle Franconia and its region can be considered a special case for Franconia. In a nationwide comparison, the Hitler Party achieved extremely high voter shares. The strong presence of National Socialism in Rothenburg and the surrounding villages was the result of an excellently functioning party apparatus. The comprehensive organizational structure significantly contributed to the penetration of local society. The National Socialists instrumentalized the city as the ideal ambassador of the Third Reich. Notably, in this small town in Middle Franconia, the density with which National Socialism manifested itself is striking.
