The political turnaround in 1989 also plunged Germany's railways - the Reichsbahn (DR) in the East and the Bundesbahn (DB) in the West - into a special phase. Run-down main lines suddenly came to life again, new vehicles, new colors, and new competitors such as cars and trucks broke into the idyll of DR traffic. Surplus East locomotives found new fields of activity in the West, while thousands of older vehicles were scrapped or temporarily stored on lines no longer in use. This book describes the irretrievably "colorful" period that came to an end on 1 January 1994 with the merger of the Reichsbahn and the Bundesbahn to form today's Deutsche Bahn AG.
