Historical politics is of central importance to the extreme right. This is reflected in their publications as well as in their demonstrations with historical references. The collective memory of the extreme right is characterized by a repertoire of myths, images, and narratives that can be understood as "sites of memory," following Pierre Nora. These refer not only to geographical locations but also to events, artifacts, or ideas. Sites of memory serve an important meaning-making function for this political spectrum: they are intended to legitimize its nationalist and ethnocentric-racist visions of community. The authors provide a close examination of selected sites of memory, analyze their symbolic significance, deconstruct the myths associated with them, and inquire about their strategic importance for extreme right politics.
