The expressionist painter, sculptor, and graphic artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) corresponded actively with various contemporaries throughout his life. For the first time, the entire correspondence is being published, comprising nearly 3,600 documents: including previously unpublished letters to his patrons and supporters Eberhard Grisebach and Helene Spengler, Gustav Schiefler, art critic Will Grohmann, art dealers Curt Valentin and Ferdinand Möller, museum directors, publishers, friends, and particularly to his life partner Erna Schilling. Letters from Erna Schilling have also been included, as they almost always pertain to Kirchner's work. This edition of letters provides a comprehensive insight into Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's life and work, offering access to what moved and preoccupied him. It is striking how he deeply hurt his closest friends.
