Thomas Mann, 1875 – 1955, is considered one of the most significant writers of the 20th century. With him, the modern German novel connected with world literature. Mann's multifaceted work has received an unparalleled positive response worldwide. From 1933, he lived in exile, first in Switzerland and then in the USA. It was not until 1952 that Mann returned to Europe, where he passed away in Zurich in 1955.

Hermann Kurzke, born in 1943, is a professor of Modern German Literature at the University of Mainz. In 1999, he published the biography "Thomas Mann. Life as a Work of Art."

Editor: Stephan Stachorski

Stephan Stachorski, born in 1967 in Kaiserslautern, studied German Studies, Philosophy, and History in Mainz. Together with Hermann Kurzke, he has edited a six-volume edition of Thomas Mann's essays. He has published works including "Fragile Republic. Thomas Mann and Post-War Germany" and is a co-editor of the Great Annotated Frankfurt Edition of Thomas Mann's works.
