Although he was very famous during his lifetime, little is known or preserved about Hippolytus. At the beginning of the 3rd century, he was undoubtedly the most learned member of the Roman Church and a man of considerable literary activity; his works were numerous, and their distribution ranged from Italy to the East, with some translated into Syriac, Arabic, Armenian, Ethiopian, and perhaps other languages. There is evidence that he played a very active role in the affairs of the Church of his time; however, there are no contemporaries who could inform us about his personal history. A century after his death, Eusebius evidently knew only what he could infer from Hippolytus's works. This volume includes the 'Canons' as well as 'The Book on Christ and the Antichrist.'.
