Many children and adolescents consider themselves overweight, even though they have a normal weight. Persistent concerns about weight and dissatisfaction with one's body, restrictive eating behaviors, excessive fitness training with the use of substances for muscle building, binge eating with and without vomiting, accompanying depressive moods, and teasing by peers are phenomena that are widespread during adolescence. Although these behaviors do not constitute psychological disorders in the strict sense, they should be taken seriously, as they can be early signs of eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder, which require urgent treatment. What lies behind the eating problems of so many young people? How can eating disorders be recognized early? What can adults, such as parents and teachers, do to counteract their development?.
