Worldwide, many deaf individuals identify as part of a global community, a cross-national "Deaf Nation." Despite the heterogeneity of their daily lives and the use of various sign languages, they share one commonality: a primarily visual perception that leads to a completely different cultural production and socialization compared to the hearing majority society. In the tradition of a classic ethnological monograph, Anne C. Uhlig describes various aspects of deaf ethnicity, visual culture, deaf kinship, and sign language naming systems. The cultural impact of orality and signaling is discussed alongside literature in sign language and the concept of Deafhood. Her study also sheds light on interaction practices, festival cycles, and the acquisition of status and prestige within the German deaf community.
