The owlet moths, or simply owlets, are a very ecologically diverse group. Their caterpillars primarily live on herbaceous plants and grasses, as well as their roots and seeds, but also on broadleaf and coniferous trees. Some have even specialized in algae, lichens, and fungi, or consume other butterfly caterpillars. The moths usually visit flowers at night and play an important role as pollinators. The gamma moth is one of the migratory moths that fly in large numbers over the Alps into our area each year.
