Anyone dealing with poetry from the GDR or contemporary lyricism cannot overlook Peter Hacks, as the poet was a master of formal artistry and one of the most outstanding talents in German literature of the 20th century. Initially popular primarily as a playwright and children's book author, Peter Hacks significantly enriched the poetry of the GDR and the post-reunification poetry from the 1980s onwards. He wrote ballads, sonnets, and couplets, covering the entire spectrum from love poems to political lyricism. In his contemporary poems, for example, he sharply addressed the turning point and its consequences, consistently bringing highly relevant content to the forefront with very classical forms of poetry until his death.
