The project "Hiob's Game" by Tobias O. Meissner has been running for 25 years now. It is designed to span 50 years, having started in 1992, and now the fourth volume is being released. It is a chronicle of the horrific, the unspeakable, the unacceptable; a conscious provocation, a challenge to readers and also to the prevailing literary landscape; the writing down of a story covering the years 1992 to 2042, focusing on the unsettling and the discomforting. Presented in a series, or as one might say today, in "seasons": each volume contains several self-contained adventures of the Faustian anti-hero Hiob Montag in his frantic struggle against the omnipresence of the macabre. In the new book, increasingly desperate humor emerges. Hiob struggles with his own body weight and even attempts to be a stand-up comedian, but fails at it because no one is laughing.
