Product details
For many years, Peter Duwe and his wife Martina have been drawn back to Brazil, to the sunny region of Bahia. In his personal diary entries, he recounts their shared journey to a country that has long become their second home. Amid the vibrant streets of Salvador, tropical beaches, and hidden fishing villages, they meet people whose warmth and zest for life leave a deep impression on them. They nurture friendships that have grown over the years, making the country feel even more familiar to them. They experience culinary discoveries, music, and traditions—along with the everyday life beyond tourist clichés. "Longing for Bahia" is a very personal travel story about the fascination with a foreign land and its people, and about the feeling of being welcomed in a place. It is a book for all those who have already come to love Brazil or wish to discover it.
Peter Duwe was born in 1960 in Wolgast, Vorpommern. He spent his childhood in the Baltic Sea city of Rostock, where his love for the sea and seafaring developed from an early age. After completing an apprenticeship as a sailor and studying marine engineering, he spent over twenty years at sea, crossing three oceans and visiting six continents. He developed a particular fondness for South America, especially Brazil, which continued to draw him back even after his time at sea. During his years aboard merchant ships, he taught himself Brazilian Portuguese and delved into the history, culture, and art of the country. Thus, he dedicated his first travel narrative, "Longing for Bahia," to this wonderful land. Today, he lives with his wife, their Shih Tzu dog, and their two Amazon parrots by Lake Eder.
