The current topic of the widely discussed democracy and legitimacy deficit of the EU is addressed in this book. The central question is whether a European media public contributes to the democratization of the EU. Following a concise discussion of the discourse-theoretical and system-theoretical models of publicness, the analysis and discussion are conducted knowledgeably and coherently from a system-theoretical perspective, drawing on the work of Niklas Luhmann. Based on an empirical meta-analysis of existing studies conducted by the author, as well as an additional study on German media coverage of a current EU event, this question is thoroughly examined. Theoretical insights are closely intertwined with current empirical findings. This reveals research gaps in both theory and practice, for which initial solutions are developed.
