The study of legal development shows how a specific human development emerges from psychological foundations according to certain laws. This leads to the curious phenomenon that the fundamental aspects of development are the same across all peoples, while the details vary everywhere. A nation may, in one way or another, be at an earlier or later stage of development. For this reason, the approach of this work, which aims to provide a comparative legal history of various cultures—specifically the Oriental, Greek, and Roman peoples—is of enlightening significance. It connects cultural history with legal history. The investigations of the two authors adhere to strict scientific principles, yet the cohesive work is easy to read and is therefore also suitable for history enthusiasts.
