Social pedagogy, which originated in nineteenth century Germany and is widely practiced in many parts of Continental Europe, has recently arrived in the English-speaking world. As a practice, social pedagogy has existed for a long time under various names, including care of the poor, child welfare, and more recently, social work. Today, social pedagogy has entered the English language and is here to stay. While it has not yet become part of everyday vernacular, it is commonly used in social professions and increasingly in academic and policy circles. In the UK, for example, social pedagogy courses (bachelor and master) have appeared in several universities, including the University of Aberdeen and the University of London. However, there currently seems to be no textbook on social pedagogy available in English.
