François-René de Chateaubriand (1768-1848) is considered one of the founders of literary Romanticism in France. His anti-Enlightenment work, Le Génie du Christianisme (The Genius of Christianity), significantly contributed to the rehabilitation of Christianity in France and became one of the catalysts for the intellectual and literary movement of Romanticism. The book, published in 1802, contained two stories - Atala and René. In both novellas, de Chateaubriand tells the tale of two extraordinary, romantic figures: a young half-Indian woman and a tormented intellectual.
