The German philologist and literary historian Berthold Litzmann (1857-1926) had known Clara Schumann since his childhood and dedicated a three-volume biography to her. At the request of Marie Schumann, Clara Schumann's daughter, he prepared this edition of the correspondence between Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms, which was published in 1926 shortly after the editor's death. "Despite the inadequacy of the material caused by fate, Professor Litzmann has succeeded beautifully, through a sensitive selection, in providing a picture of the ongoing relationship between the two friends" (Marie Schumann).
