Product details
Joseph Roth published "The Capuchin Crypt" in 1938 as a sequel to his novel "Radetzky March." Franz Ferdinand Trotta, a bourgeois relative of the lieutenant Joseph Trotta, who once saved the life of the Austrian emperor during the Battle of Solferino, moves within the upper echelons of Viennese society. Immediately upon the outbreak of war in 1914, he gets married, falls into Russian captivity, and returns to Vienna after the collapse of the monarchy. Everything has changed; Trotta struggles to get by, and his wife leaves him. Eventually, the Nazis march in. The Capuchin Crypt, the burial place of the Austrian emperors and a symbol of hope for the resurrection of the past, has closed forever.
