Product details

Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876-1907) was denied recognition during her short life, despite being one of the most significant representatives of German Expressionism with her vividly colored paintings. Rilke, who was her friend, didn't even mention her in his monograph on the painters of the Worpswede artist colony. After marrying fellow painter Otto Modersohn, Paula increasingly found herself torn between her artistic ambitions and the demands of a bourgeois life. She died at the end of 1907 from complications following the difficult birth of her only daughter, leaving behind an astonishingly extensive body of work consisting of about 750 paintings and 1000 drawings. The author Gustav Pauli (1866-1938), who was among other things the director of the Hamburg Art Gallery, introduced Paula Modersohn-Becker to a wider audience through his publications. This is a reprint of the second edition from 1922. The volume contains.
