Product details

The theologian and educator Johann Peter Hebel was the editor and author of the calendar "Rheinländischer Hausfreund" starting in 1807, which contained not only popular scientific texts but also short stories, anecdotes, fables, fairy tales, and humorous pieces, aiming to both entertain and educate the reader. In 1811, Hebel published a selection of these often witty and profound texts in book form under the title "Schatzkästlein des Rheinischen Hausfreundes." Expanded editions were released in 1816 and 1827. Among Hebel's admirers, who included the Brothers Grimm, Goethe, Gottfried Keller, and Leo Tolstoy, are some of his most famous calendar stories, such as "Unverhofftes Wiedersehen" and "Kannitverstan.".
