With his 1803 publication "A Walk to Syracuse in the Year 1802," Johann Gottfried Seume created a completely new genre of travel literature: While such books previously primarily served to provide tourist information about sights, transportation connections, and customs of the country, Seume for the first time places his subjective perception of the landscapes and cities he encounters at the forefront. Everyday observations, political or cultural considerations, and anecdotal inserts of all kinds take center stage.
