In social discourse and media perception, church and theology primarily come into play when it concerns the moral foundations of coexistence. They express their views through public statements, social messages, or position papers. Current examples include the debates surrounding the refugee crisis, assisted dying, sexual ethics, climate change, and financial capitalism. In light of this trend, church and theology should aim less at behavioral norm-setting and more at strengthening the ability for individual judgment in ethical matters. It is a misunderstanding for churches to see themselves as moral agencies. The contributions in this volume aim, among other things, to provide answers to the questions: How does the truth claim of the Gospel relate to the transmission of values in and for this society? Are church and theology tempted to lose their relevance?.
