Digital media such as Facebook are increasingly penetrating everyday life, becoming ever closer to users. Barbara Frischling's study illustrates how Facebook unfolds in an ambivalent tension between control and creative freedom as a digital panopticon. While the social networking site offers individuals a variety of opportunities for communication, networking, and self-presentation, it simultaneously reproduces neoliberal subjectivation pressures towards a flexible, creative, and effective self. The work focuses on the self-perceptions, practices, and motivations of users. Both in content and method, it provides an innovative contribution to cultural studies of technology and media research, offering important insights into the transformation processes of postmodern societies. The author, Barbara Frischling, born in 1983, studied European Ethnology and Musicology in Graz and Berlin. Her research primarily focuses on information and communication technologies in everyday life, the use of Facebook, and the digitization of music reception and production. Since 2010, she has been a member of the editorial team for the journal "kuckuck. Notes on Everyday Culture." She has also worked as a student assistant at the Center for Gender Studies and the Institute for Music Aesthetics at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
