A longing for immediacy, combined with a receptiveness to the inconspicuous and a love for careful description: this is what the ideal form of phenomenology thrives on. But where is the original that could fulfill this longing? What is the immediate, the initial, the untouched? One name for it is: sensation. The highest evidence would be to grasp it in its concept-free purity and unshaped presence. It is no wonder, then, that it was the first theme when the phenomenological style of philosophy began to emerge and gain acceptance in many places in the last third of the century.
