In today's world, domestic pigeons are primarily kept as messenger pigeons and as fancy breeds. There are likely over 800 breeds worldwide that have developed over time. Domestic pigeons can be divided into several categories: fancy pigeons bred to a specific beauty standard to win prizes at exhibitions, racing pigeons that are released in competitions over longer distances, with the goal of reaching their home loft the fastest. High-flying or performing pigeons are bred for high flight (such as the Vienna High Flyer) or for long flight durations (such as the English Tippler, which can fly for over 22 hours). Additionally, there are pigeons that perform flips during flight, known as rollers and tumbler pigeons. Pigeons that flip multiple times are called rollers (Birmingham Rollers, Oriental Rollers).
