Borobudur is one of the largest Buddhist temple complexes in Southeast Asia. The colossal pyramid is located about 25 kilometers northwest of Yogyakarta on the island of Java in Indonesia. Borobudur was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. It is considered the most significant structure of Mahayana Buddhism on Java. The stupa was likely built between 750 and 850 during the reign of the Sailendra dynasty. As the power center of Java shifted eastward in the 10th and 11th centuries, the site fell into obscurity and was buried under volcanic ash and dense vegetation. It was rediscovered in 1814, but it wasn't until 1835 that Europeans brought it back to light. A restoration program between 1973 and 1984 restored large parts of the complex to its former glory.
