The author and senior physician at the Plötzensee prison, Abraham Adolf Baer, describes the criminal in anthropological terms in this 1893 volume. He presents the physical characteristics, as well as the physiognomy, biochemical behavior, sensory organs, insensitivity, and more. Illustrated with 56 black-and-white images on 4 plates. The Italian physician Cesare Lombroso is considered the originator of empirical criminology. He published the first edition of his work "L'uomo delinquente" (translated as "The Criminal") in 1876, in which he argued that criminals could be identified by physiological traits. Lombroso's theses were based on studies (physical measurements) that he initially conducted on soldiers during his time as a military doctor and later on prisoners, from which he created plates depicting the various characteristics.
