The author Gustav Adolf Seiler (died April 30, 1936, in Basel) was a Swiss high school teacher and philologist. In addition to his work as a teacher, Seiler tirelessly contributed to the Swiss Idioticon. The Basler Mundart is a dictionary of the Basel urban and rural dialect, supplemented by approximately thirty pages of dialect grammar. With his precise knowledge of words and their meanings, the contextual embedding of words, the inclusion of dialect literature, the consideration of broader aspects of folk culture, and an appendix on the grammar of Basel German, Seiler created a work that was unparalleled at the time and remains a milestone in the history of German dialectology to this day.
