Product details

The beekeeping industry experienced its first bloom in Ancient Egypt around 3000 BC, when honey was considered the food of the gods. The first reliable evidence of beekeeping with hives dates back to the period between 2400 and 600 BC, also from Egypt. Four reliefs, one from a temple and three from tomb chambers, depict beekeepers at work with hives. The first migratory beekeepers were traveling along the Nile. In ancient Greece, the medicinal significance of honey was discovered. From the 1st millennium BC comes the beekeeping site of Tel Rehov, discovered in Israel in 2007, which was a large-scale operation with more than 100 hives. The importance of beekeeping in antiquity is underscored by regulations from Solon. Around 400 BC, Hippocrates taught that honey ointments could reduce fever and that honey water improved the performance of athletes at the ancient Olympic Games. In Central Europe, beekeeping only began to emerge later.
