Product details

The production of oilcloth, American leather cloth, wax taffeta, painter's and drawing canvas, as well as tar cloth and roofing felt, involves the manufacture of non-combustible and tanned fabrics. Oilcloth, also known as wax canvas and varnish cloth, is a waterproof fabric made from cotton, linen, or jute, coated with varnish and oil paint, which was commonly used in the past for packaging seafaring goods. To produce it, the fabric is stretched in frames, coated with flour paste, and then repeatedly covered with a paint base, which usually consists of soot and linseed oil varnish. After each coat, it is sanded with pumice stone, and once it has achieved sufficient strength and smoothness, it is coated with gloss varnish and finally lacquered. Oilcloth is produced in a variety of colors, marbled, patterned, and in wood imitation.
