Product details

The author and professor of botany and zoology at the Royal Technical University of Hanover, Wilhelm Carl Friedrich Hess (1841-1918), describes in this volume the enemies of bees in the animal and plant kingdoms. He presents representatives of mammals, birds, amphibians, insects, spiders, crustaceans, worms, and plants in both words and images. Illustrated with 58 black-and-white illustrations. The most dangerous pests for beekeeping are wax moths, whose voracious larvae destroy large amounts of wax and honeycombs. Among the pests that affect honeycombs and pollen are various mites, the bee louse, and even ants can cause damage. Many pests take advantage of the bees' winter dormancy to invade the hive and damage the honeycombs and supplies, such as house mice and shrews. In North America, bees face much larger pests.
