The author Rudolf Maria Breithaupt (1873-1945) was a composer and music educator (piano). In this handbook of modern methodology and performance practice, he presents the natural piano technique for artists and teachers, conservatories and institutes, seminars and schools in detail, both in words and images. Illustrated with 82 black-and-white images, 14 plates, and 539 musical examples. When playing the piano, the actions of touching and pressing the keys, seeing the key combinations and finger positions, and possibly the notes, as well as hearing the produced sound, occur simultaneously. Musical structures thus become sensibly comprehensible, imprinted as tactile sensations in the body, and can later be recalled. Musical expressiveness and memory are trained equally through playing, but in some respects are also standardized, making it difficult to play directly on a traditionally played piano.
