Mustafa Kemal Pasha, who was given the surname Atatürk in 1934 (1881-1938), was the founder of the Republic of Turkey and served as its first president from 1923 to 1938, following the First World War and the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. His merits as an officer in the defense of the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915 against Allied forces attempting to gain control of the Dardanelles, and from 1921 in the struggle against the Greeks who had advanced into Anatolia, made him a symbol of Turkish determination and national consciousness.
