The author of the present volume, Georg Buschan (1863-1942), was a physician, ethnologist, and ethnographer. Through his numerous works, he sparked interest in ethnological questions among a broad audience. Buschan was the founder and editor of the journal Centralblatt für Anthropologie, Ethnologie und Urgeschichte, co-editor of the Ethnologischen Anzeigers, and at times served as chairman of the Society for Ethnology and Geography. His work on the customs of peoples, which addresses love, marriage, childbirth, religion, superstition, lifestyle, cultural peculiarities, death, and burial practices among all the peoples of the world based on contributions from distinguished experts, was widely disseminated. It is richly illustrated with 477 black-and-white images in the text and several plates. This is a reprint of the original edition, Volume Three from 1923.
