Product details

In the first part, Eduard von Hoffmeister describes a hike from Tbilisi through the ruins of Ani, the Sumela Monastery, to Kerasund. In the second part, he recounts Xenophon's campaign from Sardis to the Black Sea. Xenophon (circa 355 BC) was an ancient Greek politician, general, and writer in the fields of history, economics, and philosophy. He initially accompanied the Greek contingent of the so-called "March of the Ten Thousand" as a civilian without a military role. However, the leader Cyrus fell in the Battle of Cunaxa in 401 BC. The army disbanded, and the Greek mercenary group had to try to make their way to the sea on their own. When their leader, Proxenus of Thebes, was also killed, Xenophon, whose voice had been gaining importance, was elected as the new commander, but he reportedly declined the position.
