The author of the review on shipping, land transport, and world trade (1887), Franz Reuleaux (1829-1905), was an engineer who was active in many fields of mechanical engineering and beyond. In particular, he sought to transform mechanical engineering into an exact science. In this volume, he describes in words and images, among other things, inland shipping, the development of maritime navigation, the construction and equipment of sea vessels, steamships, the organization and safety of maritime traffic, merchant fleets, and oceanic steam shipping, as well as railways and the development of world telegraphy.
