Product details

Paul Eduard Karl Brandt (March 30, 1861, in Saarbrücken; June 4, 1932, in Bonn) was a German classical philologist, high school teacher, and art historian. Brandt was known for incorporating art appreciation into his teaching. In 1910, he published his main work "Seeing and Recognizing: A Guide to Comparative Art Appreciation." Following the principles of Heinrich Wölfflin, he aimed to guide the reader towards understanding and recognizing what the artist intended to convey by using comparative juxtaposition without chronological arrangement. Each chapter consisted of an image and text that filled two facing pages, easily viewed at a glance. The book, which was well-suited as a gift due to its high-quality presentation, reached seven editions during Brandt's lifetime, with over 50,000 copies sold.
