The author of the present volume "Slavic Folklore Studies - Treatises on Beliefs, Customary Laws, Customs, Traditions, and the Guslar Songs of the South Slavs," Friedrich Salomon Krauss (1859-1938), was an ethnologist, sex researcher, and Slavic scholar. Commissioned by Crown Prince Rudolf and the Anthropological Society in Vienna, Friedrich Krauss conducted a research expedition in Bosnia, Herzegovina, Slovenia, Croatia, and Dalmatia. During his field research from 1884 to 1885, Krauss, together with informants, collected nearly 200,000 verses of the Guslar songs of the Muslim Slavs. The Gusle is the instrument of the epic singer of the Balkan Peninsula in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, and Serbia, known as the Guslar (Guslari), or Lahutar in Albanian.
