Georg Günther, a native "landlubber" from Hesse, finds himself in the Hamburg harbor at the hand of his older sister, coming into contact with seafaring for the first time at a young age. This experience has lasting effects, as after finishing school, he packs his sea bag, vows eternal fidelity to his girl, and initially ends up on the training ship Deutschland. He shares with us, with a broad smile but also a touch of nostalgia, how he experiences the training to become a sailor, his time at sea as an officer candidate, his studies at the Elsfleth Nautical School, his service as a ship officer, and finally obtaining his captain's license. This is a delightful read (not just) for those who have given their hearts to the sea and seafaring and enjoy being transported back to a time when navigating the oceans was still a craft, an adventure, and yes, also a challenge.
