This anthology provides an overview of the compatibility of family life (childcare and care for family members) and work life. The focus is on an expanded concept of compatibility that includes a career in the sense of successful participation in the labor market—not just holding a job. The authors illustrate, using data from Austria and Germany, the key characteristics of compatibility issues and present tools that can contribute to improved compatibility of family, profession, and career, thereby promoting gender equality. In addition to the opportunities, the limitations are also addressed, such as physical or emotional burdens, and especially financial losses and career disadvantages.
