Product details

At the end of a multi-year war, the Asian city-state of Ephesus found itself in a severe credit crisis at the beginning of the 3rd century BC: indebted farmers were unable to repay mortgage loans taken out before and during the war to their creditors. As a result, they faced the loss of their property, which they had used as collateral, to the lenders. To prevent this and resolve the debt crisis, the city-state enacted a complex repayment procedure through a specially created law that sought to address the conflicting interests of farmers and lenders. This law, preserved as an inscription, is the focus of the present study. It exemplifies how a city-state attempted to maintain its social stability peacefully during a turbulent phase in its history. Furthermore, the law provides detailed insights into the political, legal, and economic structures of a significant Asian city-state, enriching our overall understanding of the Greek polis during the Hellenistic period.
