In 1912, the first German championship in water polo was held. Even back then, a Berlin club won against the Schwaben-Stuttgart. For the past 30 years, the Berlin Water Friends Spandau 04 have been German champions, with Waspo Hannover winning in 1993 and Schwäbischer SV Cannstatt in 2006. Worldwide, the Germans achieved their best successes in the 1980s. Some stars from the 80s are now managing the next generation, most notably water polo legend Hagen Stamm as the coach of the current national water polo team. However, since water polo players are not supported as professionals like in other countries, they face challenges internationally.
